What are Cavapoo like?

Characteristics of Cavapoo

The Cavoodle is a designer breed developed in the 1990s with the goal of creating a hypoallergenic pet. As a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Toy or Miniature Poodle, this dog is highly intelligent and sociable, thriving in human companionship. With an outgoing, playful, and fun-loving personality, the Cavapoo is the ideal family pet. However, it does not cope well with being left alone, which can cause stress for this affectionate breed. Therefore, companionship is essential. This makes them perfect for large families with children, where they feel loved and secure, though they can also be happy in single-person homes or child-free couples, provided they receive sufficient attention.

The intelligence of an adult Cavapoo, inherited from its Poodle parent, makes it easy to train and educate from an early age. These dogs are eager to please their owners and even strangers who show them affection. They seek praise for their skills and obedience, making them an excellent choice if you want a dog that can easily learn tricks. Additionally, they are friendly with other dogs and pets and get along well with everyone, including strangers, due to their trusting nature.

As an agile and social dog, the Cavapoo loves to play and interact, so daily trips to the park are highly recommended. They enjoy living in homes with gardens, but they also adapt perfectly to apartment living and urban environments.

Physically, the Cavapoo is a small breed, though its size can vary significantly depending on its parental lineage, particularly the size of the Poodle used in breeding. Generally, they measure between 30 and 45 cm (12–18 inches) in height and weigh between 5 and 10 kg (11–22 lbs). However, size variations are common, with females typically being smaller and lighter.

The Cavoodle’s coat is curly, fluffy, and soft, giving it the appearance and texture of a plush toy. This often makes it look more like a Poodle than a Cavalier at first glance. While there is no official breed standard for coat colors, the most common shades include black, red, gray, white, tan, brown, and beige. Cavapoos are usually solid-colored, but some may have markings on the chest, paws, snout, ear tips, or around the mouth, resembling a mustache.

Their round, chocolate-colored eyes often appear slightly recessed due to the abundance of fur around them. They have long, floppy, and silky ears and a small, black, upturned nose.

Being a hybrid dog, we can find several types of Cavapoos according to the generation. The F1 Cavapoos are the first generation, that is to say, those that are the direct result of crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a purebred Mini or Toy Poodle. Therefore, as long as their parents are 100% purebred, they are 50% Cavalier and 50% Toy Poodle.

Then there are the Cavapoos F1b, coming from the mixture between a first generation Cavoodle (F1) with a new Toy Poodle or Mini Poodle. They are, therefore, 25% Cavalier King Charles and 75% Poodle. These hybrids are designed for people with severe allergy problems who want the guarantee that their puppy will have the hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle.

On the other hand, there are the multigenerational Cavapoos, offspring of Cavoodle sires and Cavoodle dams. When two F1s are crossed, a litter of F2 Cavapoos is obtained, while the crossing of two F1b gives rise to F2b Cavapoos.

This dog can also be classified according to its coat, since, as we anticipated before, you can find from specimens with an extra soft coat to specimens with a rougher coat. In addition, this can be wavy or curly. As far as color is concerned, almost any shade and color combination is allowed, including tricolor variants. This depends on the dominant inheritance (Cavalier or Poodle) and the degree of purity of the parents.

The Cavapoo enjoys a good life expectancy, as they usually live between 10 and 14 years. With an active lifestyle and proper nutrition, these dogs can live even longer, making them a companion that will be with you for many years to come. In fact, the health problems of these dogs are not very different from those of other dog breeds. Above all, a regular check-up at the veterinarian is essential (a checkup every 6 months is recommended) in order to prevent and detect common canine diseases.

Like other hybrid breeds, they can inherit diseases inherited from their predecessor breeds. Because of its Cavalier King Charles Spaniel genes, some conditions it can suffer from are syringomyelia, progressive retinal atrophy, cherry eye, dry eye, patellar problems and some heart ailments. For its part, the Poodle can inherit Addison’s disease, diabetes and Cushing’s syndrome.

For this reason, it is important that before buying a puppy you make sure that the breeder is serious and responsible. This, as far as the puppy’s health is concerned, means selective mating between Poodles and Cavaliers that do not have these diseases or a genetic tendency to develop them. If you opt for this type of kennel, as is the case of My Loving Puppies, the life expectancy of your puppy can reach or even exceed 15 years.

Other minor pathologies that can occur in this canine include dental diseases such as gingivitis, tick infections, obesity, skin allergies, eye problems and hip dysplasia due to its small size. But all these problems, besides not being serious, can often be avoided by providing proper care to the dog and visiting the veterinarian regularly

How much does a Cavoodle cost?

What does the price of a Cavapoo depend on?

The price of a Cavoodle in a specialized kennel varies according to several factors, such as the breeder's reputation, coat color (apricot and tricolor shades are more expensive than cream and bicolor), size (smaller ones are more expensive), gender (females tend to be more expensive), and lineage, especially if descended from champions.

On average, a Cavapoo puppy costs around €1,500. If you’re interested in purchasing one, you should be cautious of unusually low prices, as they may indicate poor breeding conditions or substandard health and genetic quality. This could affect not only the puppy’s medical well-being and genetic integrity but also its breed purity. Opting for a certified breeder in Spain, like ours, typically requires an investment between €1,500 and €2,500. When selecting a breeder, it’s essential to prioritize genetic guarantees and healthy breeding practices, as well as professional care, proper training, socialization, and education to ensure the well-being of this highly intelligent breed

Sociability with people and other animals

This little pup is the perfect companion for children, as it loves playing and engaging in stimulating activities. It also gets along wonderfully with other dogs and animals, including cats, as long as both have had positive experiences with one another in the past.

Cavapoos are generally energetic and enthusiastic about exercise and playtime. Because of this, they are an excellent choice for families with multiple members, especially households with children. Despite their small size, they are brave and attentive dogs, willing to protect their family if necessary. Thanks to their friendly and outgoing nature, you won’t have any trouble introducing them to new people and environments.

Although they love to play, they also enjoy relaxing, often curling up in their favorite blanket for a quiet afternoon. They are highly adaptable dogs who only need to be close to their family to feel happy. If you have work obligations or other responsibilities that require leaving them alone for a few hours, it’s important to get them accustomed to short periods of solitude from a young age. However, this should not be overdone, as they require attention and interaction to prevent the development of behavioral issues.

How to care for a Prague Ratter puppy

If you’re considering bringing home a Cavapoo, you’ll need to understand how to properly care for it. With our expert advice from specialized breeders, you’ll be fully prepared to meet your puppy’s needs. Although you can always contact us for guidance without obligation, here are some basic care tips:

  • Coat: Depending on the type of coat it has inherited from its parents, the necessary care will be different. Daily brushing with a soft bristle brush is recommended to avoid knots in Cavapoo with curly hairs that tend to tangle. For those with wavy and fine hairs, brushing can be done more occasionally, but should never be infrequent. Thorough brushing several times a week is advisable. Although they are generally hypoallergenic dogs, there are dogs that shed a lot of hair, so brushing is crucial.
  • Dental hygiene: Dental disease is common in dogs of this breed that do not have good oral hygiene. Keeping their mouth clean is important to prevent the accumulation of food debris and to avoid bacterial plaque.
  • Eye Hygiene: Tear stains and eye discharge are common in this breed. Gently wiping their eyes with a damp cloth on a regular basis will help keep them clean and healthy.
  • Higiene ocular: Las legañas tambiĂ©n son habituales en estos perros. Limpiarle los ojos con un trapo hĂșmedo con cierta frecuencia mantendrĂĄ sus ojos sanos.
  • Feeding: A diet rich in protein, moderate in fat, and low in carbohydrates will help keep your furry companion happy and energetic. However, portions should be appropriate to prevent obesity. It’s also important to keep their food fresh to avoid food poisoning.
  • Exercise and training: These dogs are enthusiastic about outdoor exercise. An adequate level of activity in dynamic families is perfect to enrich the life of this intelligent dog. Training a Cavoodle is quite easy thanks to their intelligence; they are very obedient and quickly grasp lessons during training. Dog sports, such as agility designed for small dogs, are ideal for encouraging their learning. Participating in sniffing games, hiking and activities that stimulate intelligence and teaching tricks will help this little dog develop fully and maximize its capabilities. During training, it is advisable to use a variety of sounds to familiarize them with different stimuli. During training, it is recommended to use different sounds to familiarize them with different stimuli.
  • Socialization and Education: Since Cavapoos are naturally social with both humans and other dogs, early socialization is typically smooth and problem-free. However, due to their tendency to develop separation anxiety, it’s advisable to gradually accustom them to being alone for short periods to prevent future distress.
