The first Goldendoodles, resulting from the cross between Poodles and Golden Retrievers, were born in the early 1990s, making it a relatively new breed that hasn’t yet been officially standardized. In Spain, breeding this breed is very rare, and only a few specialized breeding centers produce specimens of this unique canine hybrid. The Poodle is known for being a hypoallergenic dog, which is why it’s often crossed with other breeds so that the resulting puppies inherit this desirable trait. This is the case with the Goldendoodle, where the heavy shedding of the Golden Retriever is balanced by the minimal shedding of the Poodle. The breed is also popular for its guide and therapy dog abilities, traits inherited from the Golden Retriever.

As for its morphology, this dog stands out for having a stylized figure, with an elongated body and limbs that contrast with its small tail. Gracefulness is a predominant characteristic of these dogs, in which the body is slightly longer than tall. The head is broad at the back and tapering and thin at the front.

They have a dark, prominent muzzle. The eyes, oval, wide-set and dark, and the ears, large and hanging to the sides of the head, also give them a distinguishable appearance. These charming canine hybrids are usually white, brown or golden in color, although they can also be found in intermediate shades.

Their coat is of medium length and curly or wavy in texture, depending on the specimen. It usually has a thick, dense and dense coat, thicker and longer on the face, legs and tail. A characteristic feature of this breed is that at birth it has a smooth and abundant coat, while from 6 weeks of age, the coat begins to curl. At 3 months it is wavy and reaches its peak at 6 months, when it becomes completely curly or very wavy

The Golden doodle is a sociable, peaceful and affectionate breed. It is perfectly compatible with children, whom it adores, and with domestic animals such as cats, as long as it has been socialized with these types of pets since it is a puppy.

However, it is not usually used as a watchdog, as it is quiet and not very barky. Their benevolence, gentleness and extroverted character also contribute to their not being good canine watchdogs, since they are not suspicious dogs with strangers. They stand out, however, for their vivacity and for their hunting instinct that makes them skilled hunters and trackers of small prey.

Being very helpful and having a remarkable intelligence, it is easy to train and teach commands or tricks. In fact, it is a breed that enjoys an active and stimulating life, so it will be very happy in families that are used to outdoor activities, nature outings and sports.

It is, in short, an ideal dog for any home or family, as it is very affectionate and feels a great attachment to its owners. The only requirement in this sense is to spend a lot of time with him, as he does not tolerate loneliness.

When looking for Goldendoodle breeders, it is very important to know beforehand the different types or varieties that exist. The first distinction is the type of crossbreeding. First generation dogs, also known as F1 Goldendoodles, are direct crosses between pure Poodles and pure Golden Retrievers. When the cross is between a Poodle or Golden Retriever and a first generation specimen, a medium cross or Goldendoodle F1b is obtained. Crosses between two first generation dogs result in second generation or F2 Goldendoodles.

As far as size is concerned, the Goldendoodle breed can have three different sizes. We find the large or giant Golden doodle, with a weight between 20 and 40 kilos and a height between 50 and 60 centimeters; the medium Goldendoodle, from 14 to 20 kg and 43-50 cm; and the Mini Goldendoodle, between 6 and 14 kilos and a height between 30 and 43 cm.

To obtain the miniature variant, a Golden Retriever (female) is crossed with a Toy or Miniature Poodle (male). These tend to have a more energetic temperament than the medium and large ones.

Whatever the size taken as a reference, all Goldendoodles show a marked sexual dimorphism, since the females measure an average of 5 centimeters less than the males. In larger specimens, the size difference between the sexes is even more pronounced.

As there is still no official breed standard, there are no colors accepted as such. What there is is a preference or a greater demand for the typical colors of the two cross breeds. The light colors such as the golden of the Golden Retriever or the white, brown, black and gray of the Poodle are the most appreciated.
